The prize package was one million Linden Dollars (roughly $3,800 USD) and a chance to appear on NBC’s network television show, America’s Got Talent. The event featured pre-recorded audition tapes, audio from real people, and Second Life acts performing. More

The American Cancer Society has raised real money with virtual walkathons on the Second Life Grid. Randal Moss, the society’s manager of innovation-based strategies stated, “We benefit by increasing brand awareness. William Gibson, the influential author who coined the word "cyberspace", had a reading in Second Life to promote his novel Spook Country. Penguin books sponsored Gibson's in-world appearance, a competition to design Gibson's avatar, screenings of Gibson's movie No Maps for These Territories, and give-a-ways that highlighted themes from the book. The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic will perform in Second Life this September. They've built a replica of their concert hall where they will perform works by Rachmaninov, Ravel, and two contemporary composers. After the concert, the audience can talk to the performers and the orchestra’s principal conductor Vasily Petrenko in the virtual bar. The virtual concert is already getting international media coverage and attracting a new audience for one of Britain's oldest orchestras. More
