What is the difference between Second Life and the Second Life Grid?
Second Life is the end user experience as provided, operated, and supported by Linden Lab. The Second Life Grid is a service platform consisting of dedicated server infrastructure resources, tools, and default content. The Second Life Grid service platform is available to providers that wish to manage their own end users, under their own brand, in the largest and most flexible interconnected virtual world environment.
How can my organization bring Second Life to my country?
Anyone can build international community experiences as part of the Linden Lab's Second Life experience. There is no need for a special relationship with Linden Lab. But ambitious projects can create their own interconnected experiences as part of the Second Life Grid - this means that end user registration and support would be the opportunity of the online community provider rather than Linden Lab. For larger operators of online communities outside of the United States, the Second Life Grid Global Provider Program includes special resources, pricing, and support for international expansion efforts.
How can I become a Second Life Grid Global Provider?
The Second Life Grid Global Provider program has significant entry requirements, obligations and program fees, please see this page. If you meet the entry requirements, you can submit your information for program entry at this webform.
Can I get an exclusive license to be the sole provider of Second Life to my region?
The Second Life Grid is an open platform for use by any individual or organization - no exclusive arrangement with Linden Lab is possible. Second Life, as an end user experience managed by Linden Lab, is also offered on an open basis at this time, without exclusive arrangements. However, your organization can be the exclusive provider of your own branded experience on the Second Life Grid - this is possible either as a small project in Second Life or as a Global Provider on the Second Life Grid.
Can I use the Second Life logo and branding to promote my offering on the Second Life Grid?
Experiences on the Second Life Grid may use the Second Life Grid logo as secondary branding in promotion and other marketing, subject to specific branding guidelines. The eye-in-hand Second Life logo is not available for commercial use by organizations other than Linden Lab. All commercial efforts in Second Life, whether in Second Life or on the Second Life Grid, are generally required to use their own primary branding (e.g. in website masthead; as first and largest logo on product and marketing materials; etc).
Can I operate my own local servers running Second Life Grid server software?
All production basis Second Life Grid servers are currently located in the United States. The Second Life Grid server architecture is currently undergoing a new implementation that will permit servers to be located internationally. At that time, we intend to introduce new server code licensing models that allow organizations to run Second Life Grid servers in other countries.
